Portobello Road is a street in the London district of Notting Hill ,in England , United Kingdom.
In the mid-19th century the street was still a simple country lane in a green area with meadows and orchards that formed the link between Portobello Farm and the then Notting Hill. In the second half of that century, this gradually developed into a connecting road between the current residential areas of Paddington and Notting Hill. Trade and other employment flourished due to the proximity of the homes of the wealthy.
On Saturdays, Portobello Road Market is one of London’s most famous street markets, famous for selling second-hand clothes and antiques. Every August since 1996, the Portobello Film Festival has been held here.
The distinction of Portobello Road does not lie only in its market. A wide range of cultures living on this street and in this district contribute to creating a cosmopolitan and energetic atmosphere. Architecture plays a part, too, as the street meanders and curves along most of its length, unlike the more planned layout of most of the nearby areas.
Also on this traditional London street, the film Notting Hill (1999) starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant was filmed, which made it even more of an icon of attraction for tourists, looking for the famous bookstore where the romantic story of the film is centered.
