San Nicola is an island of the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic Sea in the province of Foggia in the Italian region Apulia.

San Nicola is an one of the Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic Sea in the province of Foggia in the Italian region Apulia.

With an area of 42 hectares, it is the second largest island in the archipelago after San Domino.San Nicola belongs administratively to the municipality of Isole Tremiti and depends on the province of Foggia in the Puglia region. The island has been part of the Tremiti Islands Marine Nature Reserve since 1989, created with the aim of protecting the flora and fauna of the archipelago. In 1996, the Tremiti Islands Marine Nature Reserve was integrated into Zone 1 in the Gargano National Park. It is the most important island of the archipelago historically, religiously and administratively.

San Nicola is the only island inhabited all year round  the population lives mainly in the southern part. Boats from Ortona, Termoli and Vasto also arrive here. The town hall, post office and first aid station are located on the island.San Nicola It’s famous for its Castello dei Badiali (Castello Angioino)​ and the Abbazia di Santa Maria a Mare – the abbey of S. Maria a Mare, the largest abbey in the Mediterranean on the sea, whose origins are lost in legend.

Access : Coordinates: 42.122222°, 15.51° / Tremiti Islands are part of the Puglia region, province of Foggia, but are connected to the mainland by ferries and hydrofoils that depart from Termoli, in Molise.

Highlights :

  • The Tremiti Islands, are an archipelago located in the Italian Adriatic Sea in the Apulia region, 12 nautical miles north of the Gargano Peninsula and 24 nautical miles east of the coast of Molise.
  • The municipality is part of the Gargano National Park. Since 1989, part of the municipality has been declared a marine nature reserve “Riserva naturale marina Isole Tremiti”. The islands form one of the main tourist attractions of the region.
  • The Tremiti are a marine nature reserve which is itself part of the Gargano National Park. Always suited to tourism, they offer rich vegetation and above all an uncontaminated sea rich in fauna, ideal for diving.
  • Top sights in San Nicola island : In addition to the sites of the Neolithic and Iron Age periods, of purely historical value, there is a necropolis with two “tombs” from the Hellenistic period, among them the Tomb of Diomede and the remains of two Roman Domus. / The landscape of the island is strongly characterized by the presence of the Abbey of Santa Maria, a monumental work that dominates the port area.
