The Basilica built in homage to the city’s first martyr, Saint Miniat, buried there in the 3rd century, place which Charlemagne visited during a pilgrimage.
It is a typical example of Tuscan Romanesque architecture and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Italy. The facade is a characteristic work of the Florentine Proto-Renaissance incrustation style. The church bears the papal honorary title of Basilica minor and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Florence’s Old Town.
